Corpus Nil é uma performance musical que explora formas híbridas de identidade e musicalidade. Faz isso através de uma interação intensa e ritualística entre um instrumento musical artificialmente inteligente, um corpo humano e o som. O espaço está completamente escuro. O jogador, cujo corpo está parcialmente nu e parcialmente pintado de preto, realiza uma coreografia tensa que gradualmente transforma seu corpo. Dois tipos de biossensores portáteis transmitem dados de seu corpo para um software. Os microfones de microfone capturam sons de músculos e órgãos internos (mecanomicograma ou MMG) e os eletrodos capturam tensões musculares (eletromiograma ou EMG). O jogador não pode controlar o instrumento, mas apenas aprende como afetá-lo e ser afetado por ele. A peça descarta relações convencionais de instrumento-intérprete – fundada no controle total do instrumento pelo instrumento – em favor de um engajamento corpóreo instável entre os dois. Através do ritmo do som, vibração e luz, o corpo do artista e o instrumento se transformam, fisicamente e conceitualmente, em algo “outro”; uma criatura desconhecida que desafia a definição comum do ser humano.

Corpus Nil is a music performance exploring hybrid forms of identity and musicianship. It does so through an intense and ritualistic interaction between an artificially intelligent musical instrument, a human body, and sound.  The space is completely dark. The player, whose body is partly naked and partly painted in black, performs a tense choreography that gradually morphs his body. Two types of wearable biosensors transmit data from his body to a software. Chip microphones capture sounds from muscles and internal organs (mechanomyogram or MMG) and electrodes capture muscle voltages (electromyogram or EMG). The player cannot control the instrument, but only learn how to affect it and be affected by it. The piece discards conventional performer-instrument relationships – founded on the performer’s full control of the instrument – in favor of an unstable corporeal engagement between the two. Through the rhythm of sound, vibration, and light, the performer’s body and the instrument mutate, physically and conceptually, into something “other”; an unfamiliar creature defying common definition of the human.

Trabalhando com biotecnologia, detecção biofísica, bem como inteligência artificial e neurorobótica, Donnarumma expressa a natureza quimérica do corpo com uma nova e inesgotável intensidade. Ele é famoso por seu foco no som, cuja fisicalidade e profundidade são por ele exploradas para criar experiências de instabilidade, admiração, choque e arrastamento. Em mais de uma década de prática, Donnarumma desenvolveu uma experiência profundamente transdisciplinar, inspirando-se igualmente na arte ao vivo, música, ciência biológica, computação e estudos culturais. Ele possui um Ph.D. em arte do espectáculo, informática e teoria corporal de Goldsmiths, da University London e, atualmente, é pesquisador da Berlim University of the Arts, em parceria com o Neurorobotics Research Lab Berlin.

Born in Naples, Italy, 1984. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. A unique presence across contemporary performance and media art, Marco Donnarumma distinguishes himself by his use of emerging technology to deliver artworks that are at once intimate and powerful, oneiric and uncompromising, sensual and confrontational. Working with biotechnology, biophysical sensing, as well as artificial intelligence and neurorobotics, Donnarumma expresses the chimerical nature of the body with a new and unsettling intensity. He is renown for his focus on sound, whose physicality and depth he exploits to create experiences of instability, awe, shock and entrainment. In over a decade of practice Donnarumma has developed a deeply transdisciplinary expertise, drawing equally from live art, music, biological science, computation and cultural studies. He holds a Ph.D. in performing arts, computing and body theory from Goldsmiths, University of London, and is currently a Research Fellow at the Berlin University of the Arts in partnership with the Neurorobotics Research Lab Berlin.
